Famous Knitters

Knitting is not just a hobby for stay-at-home moms and grandmothers. Celebrities and entertainers have embraced the hobby for its utility and creative outlet. Famous knitters from the last hundred years include Joan Crawford, James Norbury, and Tracy Ullman.

Although Joan Crawford is somewhat infamous now, at the height of her acting career she was adored for her beauty and skill. Her career in film had many highlights, from Possessed to Mildred Pierce. Joan Crawford was one of the most famous knitters of her day, even appearing on the cover of Lady's Circle magazine while knitting. The 1972 magazine article included an interview in which Joan discussed her love of afghans and knitting in general. She is not the first, nor the last, actress to insist that knitting was a good way to spend her time between scenes in filmmaking.

James Norbury may be one of the most influential and famous knitters of the early 20th century. This British man was a major force in the knitting world, including being a prominent knitted clothing designer and a TV star with his own knitting show. He was an expert on the history of knitting and knitting styles from around the world, and his knowledge contributed to the publication of his classic book, Traditional Knitting Patterns.

Knitting is still popular even with modern celebrities like Scarlett Johansson. Perhaps the most accomplished of modern famous knitters, comedian Tracy Ullman started knitting after stumbling upon a wool shop in Baltimore. Her devotion to the hobby led to her co-author Knit 2 Together, a book that combines humorous stories with all sorts of unique knitting patterns, from easy knitting patterns for children to much harder, exotic patterns.

Knitting allows people to make fun clothing and clothing accessories that even celebrities can appreciate.
