Marketing is easy - it’s creating the product that is hard, right? Wrong! It’s marketing that’s the toughest!
Start by getting your creative friends together and asking them to help draft an attention-getting statement for the product you’re trying to sell. Make it clear to prospective clients how your product can help them. Write text that is both interesting and informative by keeping the jargon out of it. Customers will be far more likely to read something that is written conversationally.
Create a video featuring some aspect of your creative process — YouTube comes to mind here. Be careful, though, that your video doesn’t sound like a commercial. The idea is to keep them watching, not send them screaming from the room!
It’s no longer sufficient to simply put up an informative website. You’ll also need a secure shopping cart and either PayPal or credit card access. Send out an online newsletter with lots of product photos. Discuss new developments in your industry and new uses for your product. Introduce your team. Highlight your company’s involvement in the community. Solicit suggestions on how to improve your service. Ask clients for feedback on their purchases.
Once each quarter, feature an article written by another small business. Have them mention your company but avoid sounding like a come-on or a commercial message. Set up a social networking site and comment on posts of interest to you. By answering questions and providing information, you can slowly establish yourself as an expert in a particular area.
Have your friends blog about your products. Team up with other small businesses that are selling related products. For instance, if you sell travel services, find someone who sells luggage and link to their site, sharing the advertising and promotion expenses. The greater your online visibility, the greater your chances are of gaining recognition and consequently of increasing your sales.
